Media Publicity and Other Writing

When I came out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Journalism degree, my mother-in-law was confident, though I doubted, that I could support my family as a writer. Some 80+ satisfied clients, 500 published articles, and 4 books later, it’s obvious she was right: every business and nonprofit needs a professional writer and a brand story!

One of my goals has been to provide the many amazing small, world-changing agencies the same quality professional marketing and PR that monied big businesses can afford, and many times that work was paid for by foundation grants. We found resourceful and powerful ways to combine professional writing, photography, and design to further incredibly deserving causes. A few treasured examples follow.

Client Success Story: Canyon Scholars

Mexico’s poorest of the poor are the children of the indigenous Tarahumara Indians, the barefoot runners featured in National Geographic in 2009. By that year Canyon Scholars had empowered hundreds of kids by matching them with American investors, a $200 donation to get a child through one year of school. Canyon Scholars asked Storycraft to help step up the promotion by explaining to readers the plight of these people, displaced by corporate miners, the marijuana industry, and drug-cartel land grabs. The result? This front cover 12-page national magazine feature article, with names changed to protect innocent leaders. To date, 500 children have received scholarships, most completing high school, many of them graduating from college, and some returning to better the lives of their people.

Client Success Story: Pilgrim Lutheran School

Because the Minneapolis media decried the abysmal 35% graduation rate of closing South Minneapolis schools in the late 1990’s, I figured making a case for this inner-city school would be an uphill challenge? Then the shock! 95% of their students, including a famous NFL player, legislator and explorer, graduated from high school? How did they know that, since Pilgrim only went up to 8th grade? Because this compassionate faith-based community essentially adopts kids. “We’re there for their baptisms, graduations and weddings!”

Why hadn’t anyone heard this amazing story? It was just that self-effacing Lutheran way. What a pleasure, then, to work within their budget to provide professional photos, stories, and this fundraising presentation to multiply their outreach! No bells or whistles. Just a keen grasp of who they are, what faith means to them, and how it’s quietly making a profound difference in the South Minneapolis community!

Client Success Story: Isuroon – Somali Women’s Health

We all define success differently, somewhere between ideal and reality. Choosing to empower and promote a worthy world-changing nonprofit that operates on a shoe-string, I provided the consulting, script writing, and show hosting, and let go of my professional expectations, partnering with a volunteer show producer and editor.

The successful collaboration supported this Somali women’s health organization seeking to educate the public on the controversial topic of genital mutilation. Somali women who were cut as teens, now in their 30’s were having babies in Minneapolis guided by doctors who avoided the complications by simply doing C-Sections. A professional health care worker explains the pioneering efforts of Hennepin County Medical Center to provide more sensitive vaginal deliveries when possible.
